DESCRIPTION:The lead and zinc mines located in the southwestern Missouri counties of Jasper\, Newton and Lawrence played a significant role in the industrial development of the United States. Mining brought prosperity\, national prominence and a great sense of local pride. The discovery of rich lead and zinc ore in southwest Missouri not only shaped the social and economic character of the region\, but also proved to be a tremendous national asset. Enough zinc and lead were mined to help win two world wars and later provided the needed materials to make batteries that would power NASA space capsules to the moon. \nJoin Brad Belk\, director emeritus\, Joplin Historical & Mineral Museums\, Inc.\, as he presents. \nThe Missouri State Museum’s “Landing After Hours” program is held the first Wednesday of each month at Jefferson Landing State Historic Site\, 100 Jefferson St. Convenient parking is available in the lot next to the Lohman Building. \nIn addition to being held in person\, this program will also be livestreamed on the Missouri State Museum’s Facebook page. \nDid you know? DESCRIPTION:Starkenburg Shrine to Host Annual Fall Pilgrimage\n  \n  \nThe Historic Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows Shrine at Starkenburg will host its annual Fall Pilgrimage on Sunday\, September 11\, 2022 \n  \nThe special day will begin at 10:00 a.m. with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.  The Pilgrims will then carry a replica of the White Lady\, an image that has been at the Shrine since 1852\, in a rosary procession through the Shrine grounds\, stopping at each of the outdoor Stations of the Cross. \n  \nA traditional German meal of fried chicken\, roast beef\, mashed potatoes\, green beans\, corn\, slaw and dessert will be served by members of the Church of the Risen Savior from 11:30 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Valentine Hall. \n  \nFollowing the meal\, the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be provided by numerous priests.  Benediction will take place at 1:00 p.m.\, followed by Mass at the Outdoor Altar at 2:00 p.m.\, which concludes the day.  Bishop Shawn McKnight will preside at the Mass\, with neighboring priests con-celebrating \n  \nReligious articles will be available for purchase and will be blessed during Mass. \n  \nThe Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows is located in Montgomery County\, just 2 miles north of the Katy Trail\, on Highway P.  Directions to the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows: \nFrom Jefferson City: take Highway 94 to Highway P.  Turn left\, go 2 miles.  Starkenburg is on the left. \nFrom Hermann: take Highway 19 North to Highway 94 West.  Go through Rhineland\, and continue to Highway P.  Turn right on to Highway P\, Starkenburg is on your left. \nFrom I-70: take the New Florence/Hermann Exit and go South on Highway 19.  In Big Spring\, turn right onto Highway K.  Turn left onto Highway P at Americus.  Go approximately 5 miles\, Starkenburg is on your right. \n  \nThe Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows is handicapped accessible.  The Shrine and St. Martin’s Church Museum are open daily for visitors.  For more information about the history and other events at the Shrine\, visit www.historicshrine.com \nYou may also contact Brenda Van Booven at 573.236.4390. \n  \n# # #
