History & Art: George Caleb Bingham & Order No. 11

January 4, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The American Civil War has long been understood as a conflict
between the North and South, leaving out the Midwest. Perhaps
no Midwesterner has suffered more from this lack of understanding
than painter, George Caleb Bingham. Through an analysis of
Bingham’s controversial painting, Order No. 11 (1868), this talk
untangles the complicated legacy of the Civil War in the Midwest.
Presenter Amy Laurel Fluker is a historian, author, and proud
central-Missourian who’s research focuses on history, memory,
and identity in the Midwest.
